Scott Smith signed a new deal at the DW Stadium ahead of the 2022/23 campaign
A lifelong supporter of the Club, the 21-year-old made his first team breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign, having joined Latics’ Academy in November 2013. He has impressed throughout his progression through the age groups, earning his first professional contract ahead of the 2019/20 season.
Scott, who has represented Wales at youth level on a number of occasions, has demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities as captain of the Latics U23s over the last two seasons. The tough-tackling midfielder was proudly handed his first start in Latics’ Carabao Cup first round win at Hull City, before featuring in the Second Round victory over Bolton Wanderers in his first senior appearance at the DW Stadium.
The 21-year-old made a further six appearances before sustaining an injury during our Papa Johns Trophy tie at Accrington Stanley in November. Scott recovered from injury at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign, playing in Latics’ final four U23 Professional Development League fixtures.
Born and raised in Wigan, Scott has always taken an extremely proactive approach to giving back to the local community, participating in a number of initiatives hosted by the Wigan Athletic Community Trust. As a reward for his dedication to helping others, Scott was named Latics’ PFA Community Champion for the 2021/22 season.
He signed a new deal at the DW Stadium in the summer of 2022, featuring in the Carabao Cup fixture against Fleetwood Town, before heading out on loan to join National League side Torquay United in September. He made his debut for the Gulls against Wrexham, earning recognition from manager Gary Johnson for his battling performance in the engine room.
