Matthew joined Latics as an U14 after being recruited from Wirral Schoolboys in December 2018. A former Tranmere Rovers academy prospect, Matthew is a physically imposing goalkeeper who excels with his distribution from the back, and ability to collect crosses in pressured situations.

Matthew has also begun to develop his experience of senior football, spending the first half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Vauxhall Motors.
