Matthew Wonnacott arrived at the DW Stadium in the summer of 2022 on the back of an extremely successful spell with National League outfit Torquay United.

Matthew, 17, penned a professional contract with Latics, linking up with Marc Maddocks' U18s outfit prior to the start of the 2022/23 Professional Development League campaign. 

The young and imposing goalkeeper, who is an excellent shot-stopper with strong organisational skills, impressed throughout his rise through the age groups at Plainmoor. 

The 2021/22 campaign was certainly one that will live long in the memory of Wonnacott, as he played a huge role in helping Torquay U18s win the South West Counties Youth League, Wotton Printers Devon Youth Cup, and Gary Else Memorial League Cup trophies last term. 

As a reward for his impressive form throughout the course of the season, Wonnacott was named on the bench for the Gulls’ first team in a National League fixture against Eastleigh.

After making his first Latics U18 appearance in the 3-1 victory over Reading, Wonnacott has made a strong start to the new season, memorably saving a penalty in the outstanding 3-1 away victory at Sheffield United in October 2022.
