Egypt international and Latics captain who represented the club and his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Sam Morsy signed for Latics from Chesterfield in January 2016 and recently penned a new and improved deal in December 2018, which will see him remain at the DW until at least the summer of 2021. After making his Latics debut against former club Port Vale, Morsy added a further 15 appearances in 2015-16 – ending up on the losing side on just one occasion as Latics lost 3-1 at Doncaster Rovers before scoring his debut goal for the club with a superb effort in a 4-1 win at Swindon Town. He was loaned out to Barnsley in August 2016 – making 14 appearances for The Tykes – before being recalled to Latics in January 2017, when he agreed terms on an extended deal. He marked his return in fine style, with a man-of the match performance in the Emirates FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest and scoring in the 2-1 Sky Bet Championship home win over Brentford. He went on to play a further 15 league games for Latics in 2016-17. Following the appointment of his former Chesterfield boss Paul Cook as Latics manager in 2017-18, Morsy was named Latics captain and went on to be a near ever-present in a successful campaign both personally and collectively as Latics lifted the Sky Bet League One title and Morsy was named in the 2017-18 EFL League One Team of the Season. On the international scene, Morsy continued to establish himself as part of Egypt national team, with further caps followed by a call-up to the final squad for Egypt's first FIFA World Cup in 28 years, in 2018 in Russia. Born in Wolverhampton to an Egyptian father Morsy began at the Wolves academy but was picked up by Port Vale at the age of 16 and came through their youth system to play 71 times for the Valiants. He switched to Chesterfield in 2013 and made 99 league appearances for the Spireites as a virtual ever-present until his move to the DW Stadium. He made his Egypt debut in August 2016 whilst a Latics player, coming on as a second half substitute against Guinea.
