Republic of Ireland international James McClean returned to the DW Stadium on an initial one-year deal this summer six years after leaving Latics.
McClean, 32, joined Latics in 2013 from Sunderland, and made his debut in the Community Shield Final at Wembley against Manchester United.
He was named as the Club’s Player of the Year in the 2014/15 campaign, with his performances in that campaign earning him a move to then Premier League side West Brom Albion.
McClean spent three seasons with the Baggies before joining Stoke City in July 2018, where he would go on to win the Player of the Year in the 2019/20 campaign.
With over 300 appearances across the top flight and the Championship to his name, McClean brings vast experience and quality to Leam Richardson’s squad.
Popular with Latics supporters for his tireless and committed performances, the Club has equally held a place in McClean’s heart since his departure, highlighted further last year when he donated £5,000 to the Wigan Athletic Supporters’ Club Crowfunder as the Club’s supporters raised over £750,000 to save Latics, prior to the acquisition of the Club by Phoenix 2021 Limited.
McClean was presented to the DW Stadium crowd before the clash with Wycombe Wanderers, before scoring on his second debut in the 2-0 victory against Charlton Athletic in the following weekend.
