Max Power returned to Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2021 after ending a three-year spell with fellow Sky Bet League One outfit Sunderland. Born in Birkenhead, the midfielder joined his local team Tranmere Rovers at the age of eight. He made his senior debut for Rovers in the 2011/12 season and went on to make 126 appearances, scoring 19 goals before he joined Latics in the summer of 2015 as an exciting and enthusiastic 21-year-old. Power hit the ground running in his debut campaign at the DW Stadium, scoring six times from central midfield as Latics won the Sky Bet League One title in the 2015/16 season. The midfielder then went on to help Latics win the League One title for the second time in three years in 2017/18 - scoring a number of Goal of Season contenders including strikes against AFC Wimbledon and Oxford United. Power, who is in the top 50 all-time league appearance makers for the Club having featured in 127 league games during his first spell, left Latics to join Sunderland on an initial loan deal in August 2018, with the deal later becoming permanent in the following January. The 27-year-old was one of the first names on the team sheet during his three seasons at the Stadium of Light, with Power making a total of 138 appearances for the Wearside outfit. Power made 53 appearances in all competitions last season and lifted silverware at Wembley as Sunderland defeated his former club Tranmere Rovers in the final of the Papa John's Trophy. After returning to the Club, Power was named as vice-captain prior to the 2021/22 campaign and made his 150th appearance for Latics in the 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers. The midfielder went on to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of League One titles in Latics colours last term, being a vital cog in Leam Richardson’s starting XI over the course of the season.
