The experienced goalkeeper is now in his sixth season at the DW Stadium after signing a two-year deal with the Club in the summer of 2021.
The Liverpool-born goalkeeper began his professional career at Everton, though he did not make a first-team appearance for the Toffees as he played the role of understudy during the Tim Howard era. He moved to Leyton Orient in 2008 and went on to play over 175 games for the Brisbane Road Club before signing for Preston North End in 2014, where he figured 17 times.
Loan spells at Coventry City, Rochdale and Colchester United followed before Jones agreed to an 18-month deal at Stevenage in January 2016 where he was a virtual ever-present, making 57 appearances before his eventual move to the DW Stadium in August 2017.
Jones, who boasts over 300 career appearances, has produced a number of excellent performances during his spell with Latics, helping the Club to the League One title and Championship in his first two seasons, with his eight clean sheets in his debut campaign contributing to the Club’s record clean sheet tally in a single campaign (30).
The goalkeeper was also a truly inspirational leader for Latics during the 2020/21 campaign as Leam Richardson’s side battled immense adversity to retain their Sky Bet League One status against all of the odds. He continued to be a huge influence both on and off the field for Latics last term, as they heroically won the League One title and reached the Semi Finals of the Papa John’s Trophy.
