Jack Whatmough joined Latics in the summer of 2021 having made over a century of appearances for Portsmouth FC.
A central defender, Whatmough progressed through the Academy ranks at Portsmouth and signed his first professional deal with Pompey in August 2013. Whatmough made 38 appearances in all competitions in the 2020/21 campaign, scoring on two occasions against Burton Albion and Peterborough United.
The former England U18 international arrived at the DW Stadium having previously worked with Leam Richardson at Fratton Park between 2015 and 2017. After making his debut in the season opener at Sunderland, he became an instant hit at the DW Stadium for his assured performances at the heart of the defence, scoring his first goal for the Club in the 4-1 victory at Accrington Stanley in September 2021.
After helping Latics win the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One title, Whatmough was deservedly recognised with a number of individual accolades, winning the Club's Player of the Year prize as well as being named in both the EFL and PFA Teams of the Season.
At the start of the 2022/23 Championship season, Whatmough made his 200th career appearance against Reading at the DW Stadium.
