Gwion Edwards arrived at the DW Stadium ahead of the 2021/22 campaign following a three-year spell with Ipswich Town. The wide player started his professional career at Swansea City in 2007, and spent seven years with the Swans after graduating from the Club’s Academy. During his time at Swansea, he gained experience via loan spells in both England and Scotland. Edwards spent two spells on loan at Scottish side St Johnstone, as well as a spell with Crawley Town, before making a permanent switch to the latter in 2014. Having joined Crawley on a full-time basis, Edwards went on to make 93 appearances in all competitions over three seasons at the Broadfield Stadium, scoring 15 goals. Edwards then joined Peterborough United in June 2016 During his two seasons at London Road, Edwards made 74 appearances for the Posh, scoring 16 goals, before moving to Ipswich Town in the summer of 2018. He scored his first goal for the Tractor Boys on his debut against Blackburn Rovers at Portman Road on the opening day of the season and went on to score six goals in 34 appearances in his debut season, including the East Anglian Derby against Norwich. Edwards scored against Latics in the opening game of the 2020/21 season and was in fine form throughout the early stages of the campaign. He featured 36 times in League One for the Tractor Boys, and ended the campaign with six goals, making him their second-leading scorer. In total, he made 109 appearances for Ipswich, scoring 14 goals.
Edwards marked his Latics debut with a goal against Sunderland on the opening day of the 2021/22 campaign and made over 30 league appearances as Latics clinched their return to the second tier as champions of League One.
