Ben Amos joined Latics on a two-year deal in the summer of 2021. The goalkeeper began his career in Crewe Alexandra’s Academy before joining Manchester United at the age of 11. He progressed through the ranks at Old Trafford and having impressed for the Red Devils’ Reserves, Sir Alex Ferguson gave him his competitive first-team debut when he was 18 in a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough in the Third Round of the League Cup in 2008.
Amos would go on to represent United on seven occasions - once in the Premier League, five times in the League Cup, and once in the Champions League. While with United, Amos enjoyed domestic and international loan spells at Peterborough United, Molde, Oldham Athletic, Hull City, Carlisle United and Bolton Wanderers, before joining the latter permanently in July 2015 on a four-year deal.
Upon his return to the University of Bolton Stadium, Amos made 44 appearances in the following Sky Bet Championship campaign, before making a temporary loan move to Cardiff City for the 2016/17 season. The stopper spent further time away from Bolton, signing for Charlton Athletic on loan in July 2017. The goalkeeper had an extremely successful spell at the Valley in a season that saw the Addicks narrowly miss out on promotion to the Championship. He then spent a season-long loan with Charlton’s South London rivals Millwall in 2018/19, before returning to the Addicks in the summer of 2019 on a permanent deal.
A consistent performer between the sticks, Amos enjoyed a particularly standout 2020/21 campaign, keeping 17 clean sheets in total across the entire League One season. His impressive form resulted in Amos earning a move back to the North West to link up with Leam Richardson’s squad in June 2021, and it’s safe to say his first season at the DW Stadium was a huge success. After making his debut against Sunderland on the opening day of the 2021/22 campaign, Amos was ever-present as Latics won promotion to the Championship as champions of League One.
