After his first season as Wigan Athletic Captain, Jason Kerr has penned a special column to reflect on the 2024/25 Sky Bet League One campaign.

Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, I would like to say a special thank you to all the supporters on behalf of the players.

While it was a mixed campaign in terms of results, one constant thing was the support at both home and away matches from our loyal and passionate fanbase.

Win, lose, or draw, our supporters never fail to get behind the team, and as players, it means the world to us. Wigan Athletic is a unique Football Club that likes to do things differently, and we’re all proud to represent the people of Wigan.

I think the last few weeks have epitomised what the Wigan community is all about, especially with how people support each other both on and off the field.

We were all devastated to learn the passing of lifelong supporter Darren Orme - a familiar face to me and many on the Wigan Athletic terraces over the years. As a squad, we wanted to make sure we attended his funeral to give him the send-off he deserved, and seeing so many supporters there emphasised what a special Club this is. We’ll miss hearing his chanting from the stands and seeing his infectious smile. We will make sure to always remember him, and keep him in our hearts every time we step on the field.

On a personal note, the 2024/25 season has been really special, as it has been my first as Wigan Athletic captain. It is, without doubt, one of my best career accomplishments to date.

Wigan Athletic is a special club, and it speaks volumes that from the moment I arrived from St Johnstone in the summer of 2021, I was instantly made feel part of the Wigan Athletic family. The Club prides itself on how it’s a close-knit community, where everyone works towards the same goal and wants the best for each other. That philosophy is definitely alive and kicking at the Club, especially under our Head Coach.

The Gaffer has been brilliant since he came in, and has got everyone back enjoying their football again. Everyone always has a smile on their face and a positive, happy atmosphere will only stand us in good stead on the field.

The future is certainly looking bright - we finished the campaign on an eight-game unbeaten run which will only stand us in good stead in the future. It’s going to be an exciting new era at the Football Club, and if everyone comes together and pulls in the same direction, anything is possible.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable off-season and we’re already looking forward to seeing everyone back at the Brick Community Stadium in August!
