After completing a permanent switch to Wigan Athletic from German outfit 1. FC Nürnberg, Joe Hungbo revealed he's aiming to be a real entertainer throughout his stay at the Football Club.

Hungbo has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Brick Community Stadium, having been influenced to make the move by the vision of Manager Shaun Maloney and Sporting Director Gregor Rioch.

The 24-year-old, who prides himself on being a direct and pacey forward, has gained experience in the EFL and Scottish Premiership in recent seasons, most recently spending the first half of the 2024/25 season with Latics' Sky Bet League One rivals Rotherham United.

Now starting a new chapter with Latics, Hungbo expressed he wants to get the Wigan Athletic supporters out of their seats and positively contribute in the final third throughout his time at the Brick.

“I’m buzzing,” he told Latics TV.

“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve heard some really good things, and the Manager has been one of my admirers in terms of his philosophy.

“Everyone goes through a phase where they’re trying to find a Club to see if it clicks, and I definitely feel like this is the Club for me. All the boxes are ticked and everything is set up for me to do what I need to do. Hopefully I can produce for the Football Club.

“I am an entertainer. I like to get at defenders and make the crowd jump out of their seats.

“I like to create chances, score goals, and help the team get up to the pitch. I bring a lot of energy into the side, and a little bit of something different. I definitely feel that the philosophy and playing style will bring out the good attributes that I have."

Hungbo is also extremely excited to work under the guidance of Maloney, as he believes the Latics Gaffer can be key to unlocking his potential in the coming seasons.

“The Manager let me know that I’ve been on his radar for a long time, and I’ve played against his teams at Ross County, Huddersfield Town and recently at Rotherham United.

“You want to be somewhere where you’re wanted and feel appreciated. That’s the first thing I felt when he first spoke to me, and I hope I can repay him by taking the team up the table.

“You couldn’t ask for anyone better. He is definitely someone I look up to tactically and technically, and I feel like I can improve my game a lot (under his guidance). That’s definitely one of the reasons that enticed me to come here.

“I feel like I need to take that next step in my career, and really reach the potential I know I can reach. He can definitely unlock that!"
