- The Latics Manager speaks ahead of Saturday’s trip to Adams Park
- Maloney: “It doesn’t matter the team that we play, we’ve played some of the best teams in our league - and beat some. We’ll try the same against Wycombe.
Shaun Maloney hopes his Wigan Athletic side can get back to winning ways at Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.
Latics head down south for the second time this week, just days after their near-500-mile round trip to Crawley Town. A tough challenge at Adams Park awaits the Tics, as they take on a Wycombe Wanderers side who are one of the leaders in the race for automatic promotion.
Wycombe have taken Sky Bet League One by storm, sitting in second place, five points ahead of Wrexham AFC. It has been a campaign to remember, particularly on home soil with the Chairboys having lost just two of their 14 league fixtures at Adams Park.
With both sides needing a victory to aid their respective targets, it’s set to be a competitive encounter, and Latics will naturally have to bring their A-game to return home with three points.
Speaking pre-game at Christopher Park, the Latics Gaffer expressed the importance of taking confidence from their midweek performance when facing the Chairboys.
“With the performance and how much we created, we should’ve won the game,” Maloney said when reflecting on the midweek draw at Crawley Town.
“It was as aggressive as we’ve been in an attacking sense for a while. The level of performance has been good at times - Fulham in the second half and at times against Lincoln - but Crawley felt slightly different.
“We can take confidence. It’s the same as the Fulham game and as Stockport. Stockport were flying, and the game was 50-50.
“It doesn’t matter the team that we play, we’ve played some of the best teams in our league - and beat some. We’ll try the same against Wycombe.
“The last time we played Wycombe was under a different manager. I really liked their front four - they’ve got different options in the right wing.
“They were very good at the longer pass. They were really threatening, and they’ll be the same again. They’re flying and confidence will be high for them. We’ll try and outplay them.”
