We are pleased to announce that Jonny Smith has extended his contract with Wigan Athletic.

Smith has penned extended terms at the Brick Community Stadium until at least the summer of 2027, with the new contract signifying his outstanding form during his time at the Football Club to date.

Having arrived in the summer of 2023 from fellow Sky Bet League One side Burton Albion, Smith has enjoyed his fair share of unforgettable moments over the last 18 months.

In his debut campaign in WN5, the popular winger more than played his part as the Football Club achieved their season objective of survival with matches to spare, despite starting eight points behind their 23 other League One counterparts.

Smith netted four goals in 34 appearances across all competitions, with three of those being absolute belters. His outrageous curling strike against Barnsley – which rescued a late point at Oakwell – was voted by supporters as the Goal of the Season at the 2023/24 End of Season Awards Dinner.

While Deja vu sadly struck again in pre-season and Smith missed the first two months of the new season, the 27-year-old wasted little time in making his mark. Having quickly regained his match sharpness, Smith netted three goals in five matches in the month of November, which led to the Liverpudlian winning the Christophe Duchamp Player of the Month for the second time in his Latics career.

He has continued to be an influential player for Shaun Maloney’s men over the winter months, scoring important goals in the home fixtures against Bristol Rovers and Lincoln City, and providing many assists for his teammates.

Testament to his character and kind nature, Smith has always taken a proactive approach to giving back to the Wigan Borough off the field. Latics’ number 18 has played a leading role in community visits, as well as going the extra mile with younger supporters who have visited him at Christopher Park and the Brick Community Stadium.

A fan favourite who has an eye for the spectacular as he proved with another sensational strike against Fulham, Smith often gets members of the Latics faithful onto their feet with his direct displays, and will now be hoping to create more memories in WN5 after signing a deserved contract extension.

Commenting on his contract extension, Jonny Smith said:

"It's a really proud moment for me and my family. It's an absolute honour to play for Wigan Athletic, and I am absolutely over the moon to extend my stay here. Growing up locally, I knew what the Club was all about, and it has lived up to its reputation as a special family Club.

"The players, staff, and supporters have been brilliant with me, and I've loved every minute of my time here so far. Wigan Athletic definitely feels like home to me, and I am looking forward to spending my future here. In a short space of time, I've created so many incredible memories here, and it’s now time to create more!"

First Team Manager Shaun Maloney said:

"It's absolutely brilliant news. Jonny has been an influential player during my time at the Football Club and is extremely popular amongst the players, staff, and supporters.

"Not only a talented footballer, Jonny has an outstanding attitude and mentality, and I am hoping he can continue to flourish in a Wigan Athletic shirt."

Sporting Director Gregor Rioch added:

“We're delighted that Jonny has extended his stay here, as he is an important player for our Football Club.

“His attitude - both on and off the field - has been exemplary, and we're looking forward to working with Jonny over the next few years."

Congratulations, Jonny!
