Wigan Athletic is delighted to confirm the appointment of former Republic of Ireland coach Glenn Whelan.
Whelan, who enjoyed a decorated 22-year playing career, has joined Shaun Maloney’s backroom staff ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash at Lincoln City.
The 40-year-old will provide a wealth of experience to the Football Club, having made over 200 Premier League appearances with Stoke City and Aston Villa, and figured 91 times for his national side.
Whelan has taken his first steps in coaching during recent seasons, working at fellow League One side Bristol Rovers as a First Team Coach and with the Republic of Ireland National Team.
He has gained some incredible experiences with the Republic of Ireland, being part of the U16s coaching team at the Victory Shield competition and assisting John O’Shea with the Men’s Team as recently as June.
A fierce competitor during his playing days, Whelan will be a fantastic role model for Latics’ young squad, joining Max Rogers, Andy Lonergan and Shadab Iftikhar in Maloney’s coaching team.
Commenting on his appointment, Glenn Whelan said:
“I feel absolutely honoured to have joined Wigan Athletic. It’s a fantastic Football Club, and the existing project is really exciting, and something that I cannot wait to be a part of.
“I would like to thank Shaun Maloney for providing me with the opportunity to continue my coaching career with the Club. His coaching philosophies align with my own, and I am hoping I can use my experiences - both as a player and a coach - to help the players as much as I can.”
First Team Manager, Shaun Maloney added:
“Glenn will be a brilliant addition to our backroom team, and I am delighted to have him on board.
“He has had some excellent experiences as both a player and a coach, including coaching the Republic of Ireland National Team.
“I am really looking forward to working with Glen, and I’m positive his arrival will be beneficial for the players and the Club’s long-term plans.”
Welcome to Wigan Athletic, Glenn!
