Calvin Ramsay expressed that pre-season is not only an important time to get invaluable minutes under your belt, but to use the opportunity to test your credentials against teams from different divisions.

Latics welcomed Blackburn Rovers to the Brick Community Stadium for their only pre-season friendly on home soil, and Shaun Maloney's men gave an extremely positive account of themselves against the Sky Bet Championship side.

Although Latics fell behind following Jack Vale's opener, Thelo Aasgaard brought the game back level with 11 minutes remaining, netting his fifth goal in pre-season.

It was an afternoon when Latics often showcased their quality against a team from the league above, and Ramsay believes that pre-season is a great time to challenge yourself as the new season draws closer.

“It was good,” he told Latics TV.

“For me, to get 75 minutes in the legs was the main thing against a decent side. It was important for all the boys to get some minutes, and hopefully we can build on that.

“Blackburn are a good side and you need to challenge yourselves in pre-season against better teams to see where you are and how you cope with it. At times today, we did really well and could’ve won the game."

Ramsay was the Club's second signing in the Summer Transfer Window, and the on-loan Liverpool man expressed he already feels at home thanks to the welcoming environment created by all the staff, players, and supporters.

“I’ve loved it. All the boys are good and I’ve settled in well."

Latics will end their 2024/25 pre-season preparations with a double-header fixture weekend against Tranmere Rovers and Barrow, and Ramsay emphasised that both League Two outfits will provide them with a real physical challenge.

“Both teams will be physical and put it on us. It’s a good test and we’ve got to challenge ourselves."
