Emmerson Boyce expresses his delight to be back at Wigan Athletic as the Club's first-ever Women's Manager

Latics' 2013 FA Cup-winning captain discusses his return to the Football Club as Women's Manager
Boyce: "We want to make sure the town is proud of its female team. There’s going to be a great community feeling and it’s an exciting time for the town."

Emmerson Boyce is incredibly proud and excited to be entrusted with the responsibility of taking the Football Club's first-ever Wigan Athletic Women's Team forward.

Latics launched their first-ever official Women's Team back in March, and following a very thorough interview process, Boyce was appointed as Manager on the back of a successful four years with the Barbados Football Association.

The historical appointment marks an emotional return to the Brick Community Stadium for Boyce, who enjoyed a memorable playing career with Latics, making 298 appearances and captaining the Club to a famous FA Cup victory in May 2013. He is delighted to be back at the place where he calls home, and will get to work immediately ahead of the 2024/25 campaign kicking off in September.

Joining at the start of the Latics Women's Team's historical journey, Boyce is determined to help the Football Club develop a highly-competitive team, that makes everyone associated with the town proud.

“It’s exciting, and I am delighted to be back," Boyce told Latics TV.

“When I spoke to Hayley (Sherratt) about the vision, it’s a fantastic opportunity to develop women’s football in this region. I am so happy, and I can’t wait to get started.

"It’s a project I have been doing in Barbados for the last four years, and when I heard about the opportunity, I wanted to be part of it. I look back at my time in Barbados with great memories and I am looking forward to my new challenge.

“Without the backing of the ownership group, it doesn’t go anywhere so it’s fantastic to hear that they want to progress the Women’s Team and create pathways for female footballers.

"We want to make sure the town is proud of its female team. There’s going to be a great community feeling and it’s an exciting time for the town.

“For me personally, I have a great history here and I want to share my experiences with the players and coaching team. We are on this journey together and we want to progress.

“The main thing now is to be successful on and off the field, make sure we create role models, and a clear pathway to girls.

“Female football is on the rise, and Wigan wants to be part of it. It is a great opportunity for everyone involved to showcase how good we can be. We want to play football the right way and make sure we are successful.

"It’s going to be player-focused on development, and we want to create a winning environment which is a must. We want the fans to support the Women’s Team. If the fans are behind us, we can achieve anything. Women’s football is going to be special in this region."
