  • Latics sign Charlie Goode on loan!
  • Experienced defender completes loan move until the end of the 2023/24 campaign
  • Goode, who has made over a century of appearances in the EFL, captained Northampton Town to promotion to League One in 2020

Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm the loan signing of defender Charlie Goode from Premier League side Brentford until the end of the season, subject to Premier League, EFL and FA approval.

Goode, 28, will link up with Shaun Maloney’s side for the remainder of the 2023/24 Sky Bet League One campaign, adding a wealth of experience to the squad.

The towering defender spent the infancy of his playing career in non-league football with Harefield United, Hadley, AFC Hayes, and Hendon before joining Scunthorpe United in the summer of 2015. Goode seamlessly made the step up to the English Football League, marking his professional debut with a goal against Burton Albion, before making a further 13 appearances in his breakthrough year.

The 28-year-old made 46 appearances over the next two campaigns, helping the Irons reach the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs in both of those seasons. Goode continued to be a key player at the start of the 2018/19 season, before making a Deadline Day loan switch to Northampton Town, a deal that would later become permanent in the following summer on the back of his defensively astute performances.

Goode's first and only full season at Sixfields was one to remember, as he captained the Cobblers to glory in the Sky Bet League Two Play-Offs, featuring in 45 games across all competitions. His form caught the attention of Brentford, who signed him on a long-term contract in August 2020, having been impressed with his quality in possession and aerial threat in both boxes.

Goode has made a total of 20 appearances for the Bees, with 14 of those coming in the Premier League. The experienced defender, who has had loan spells in the Championship with Sheffield United and Blackpool FC in the last two seasons, has become Latics' second arrival of the January Transfer Window and will add further experience to Maloney's defence during the remainder of 2023/24.

Welcome, Charlie!

Commenting on his move to Latics, Charlie Goode said:

“I am delighted. It’s a move that worked for everyone, and I’m here to play games and help the Club push up the league. “I had some good conversations with the Manager, and I am looking forward to getting going.”

First Team Manager, Shaun Maloney added:

"We have been tracking Charlie for some time and I'm really happy we have been able to sign him. He will add experience and aggression to our defensive line and help our younger players develop.

"Charlie is the profile of player and person we have been looking for. He is dominant in the air, very physical and brings good attributes with the ball. With Omar Rekik returning to Arsenal, Charlie will certainly strengthen our team for the fight ahead.”

Sporting Director, Gregor Rioch said:

“We are pleased to sign Charlie who has experience and quality. I want to pay thanks to Brentford for working with us and allowing Charlie the opportunity to join us.

"The manager and I have been working hard on trying to bring Charlie to the Football Club for some time and I am confident he will be a great addition for us.”

The defender will wear the number 29 shirt during his time at the DW Stadium.
