Wigan Athletic will be welcoming their first-ever official Women's Team to supporters ahead of Saturday's opening day fixture against Charlton Athletic.
Back in March, rather fittingly on International Women's Day, Latics unveiled the launch of their brand-new Women's Team, kicking off the start of a new and historical journey.
Soon followed the integral appointments of Head of Women Operations Hayley Sherratt, Head Coach Martin Fitzsimons, and Manager Emmerson Boyce, to help shape the future of the Club's Women’s Team. All three had previous involvement with Latics, with Emmerson having captained the Club to FA Cup glory in 2013, and Hayley and Martin having worked for the Wigan Athletic Community Trust for a number of years.
Plenty of hard work has gone over the summer months, from the redevelopment of Edge Hall Road Stadium in Orrell to assembling a squad capable of achieving something special. Following a successful AGM meeting in the middle of July, Latics learned that they'll be playing in the Lancashire Women’s County League which is the Championship of Tier 7, starting the season on Sunday 1 September 2024.
In order to introduce the new Women's Team to supporters, the Club will be hosting a number of special events prior to the Charlton Athletic fixture on Saturday 10 August, both before the game and at half-time.
The Wigan Athletic Women's Team will be based in the Heatable South Stand Bar at the Brick Community Stadium from 4pm, to meet supporters, pose for photographs and sign autographs. There will be a special Q+A with Emmerson, Martin, and Hayley at 4:15pm, and later on in the evening, the team will be unveiled to the fans at half-time.
