This week’s School of the Week showcases the impact of the Premier League Inspires programme on students

  • Lowton Church of England High School named School of the Week to celebrate the work of Community Trust Staff and students
  • Trust staff have been delivering the PL Inspires programme at the school with the aim of raising students’ resilience, confidence and aspirations
  • “It teaches me to have a better attitude towards the things I do, how to be resilient and not give up, working on how to stay confident.” – Lowton High School student, Kylan.

This week, Wigan Athletic Community Trust has named Lowton Church of England High School as School of the Week!

Community Trust staff began working with students at the school in September, delivering the Premier League Inspires programme, with a focus specifically on developing social skills.

So far, students have been working on building their resilience, confidence and teamwork skills, with a mixture of classroom and PE delivery, meaning students immediately get to put their newly learned skills to practice.

Lowton High School student, Kylan, believes the programme has had a positive impact on him and has already helped him to develop new skills. Speaking at one of the sessions, he said:

“It’s more active and more fun. You learn, but you’re having fun at the same time, instead of just doing a worksheet in lesson.”

“I feel like I can speak more freely to other people because I’ve got more confidence from what we’ve been doing in the lessons.”

“It teaches me to have a better attitude towards the things I do. How to be resilient and not give up, working on how to stay confident.”

Head of Adapted Curriculum at the school, Miss Green, also said she has seen a positive effect on students taking part in the PL Inspire programme, and is eager to see how they develop further throughout the year, saying:

“It’s nice for them to see a different face. I think they find it easier to talk about their emotions, about their feelings and things they find difficult in school, with a new face.

“We’ve got students who are really excelling because they’re loving the opportunities that they’re having here. They’re really coming out their shells and showing leadership skills. Other students, at the beginning, have been very much down on themselves, saying they can’t do it, but by the end, they’ve ended up being the best ones in the group and really making progress.

“We’re loving the opportunities that we’re getting through Wigan Athletic, and the chance to come and see the Club, experience a match day and see the behind the scenes things that go on as well, I think that’ll be a great opportunity for [the students].”
