Latics left-sider voted as the Club’s 44th Player of the Year after an outstanding 2022/23 campaign

  • 2022/23 Wigan Athletic Player of the Year | James McClean
  • Latics left-sider becomes the Club's 44th Player of the Year, and only the fourth player to have ever won the award on more than one occasion
  • The 34-year-old was ever-present for Latics in the Sky Bet Championship, helping contribute towards 11 goals in 46 league matches

Congratulations are in order to James McClean, who has been voted as the Club’s 2022/23 Player of the Year award winner by the Wigan Athletic supporters.

The popular Republic of Ireland international received 51% of the overall vote, after being a virtual ever-present for Shaun Maloney’s side throughout the 2022/23 Championship campaign.

The Latics left-sider certainly gave everything for the Football Club in each one of his 46 league outings for the Tics, contributing to 11 goals in the process (three goals, eight assists). He provided constant leadership throughout testing circumstances at the DW Stadium, memorably captaining Latics against Rotherham United on the final day of the season.

Having also been named the supporters’ Player of the Year in 2014/15, McClean has now become only the fourth Latics player to have won the award on more than one occasion since the Club’s election into the Football League in 1978, following Colin Methven (2), Peter Atherton (2) and Arjan De Zeeuw (3).

3PL Wigan Athletic Academy graduate Charlie Hughes came second in the online vote, whilst last season's Player of the Year Jack Whatmough ranked third.

Congratulations, Maca!
