Latics’ award-winning charity is delighted to welcome a company led by Mike Danson as the new owners of Wigan Athletic Football Club.

As highlighted in Mike Danson’s own statement, Wigan Athletic has a vital role to play in supporting the local community, businesses, and people of Wigan.

Having someone who understands the importance of the Football club to the town is imperative to our work and can only enhance our impact on the local community.

While we already work closely with a host of local partners, the new ownership group presents an exciting opportunity to build on those relationships and expand our already successful partnerships in the heart of our town.

We would also like to place on record our thanks to Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, Executive Leader of Wigan Council David Molyneux, CEO of Wigan Council Alison McKenzie, the Official Wigan Athletic Supporters Club, the EFL and our friends and colleagues at the Football Club for their tireless work behind the scenes to secure the future of Wigan Athletic under the new ownership.

Speaking on Mike Danson’s purchase of the club, Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Head of Community, Gareth Nolan, said:

“On behalf of our board of Trustees and all the staff at the Community Trust, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Mike Danson as the new owner of Wigan Athletic.

“While our independence from the Football Club meant that the financial issues under the previous ownership group had minimal impact on our work and staff, we are pleased to see that those issues have been swiftly resolved by the new owners.

“We look forward to continuing our work with Wigan Athletic towards equality in health, life chances and communities and are excited to see what new opportunities for expansion may arise under the new ownership.”
