Wigan Athletic is pleased to confirm that highly-rated midfielder Joe Adams has signed a new two-year contract with the Football Club.

Adams, 19, has put pen to paper on a new deal that runs until the summer of 2025, having impressed immensely since his arrival from Eastleigh.

The young midfielder grew up in Guernsey before bravely making the move to Southampton at the age of 16 to try and forge a career in the game. He enrolled on Eastleigh's Football Academy programme in the summer of 2021, receiving invaluable coaching from former Spitfires’ Assistant Manager Jason Bristow to aid his development.

He signed for Southern League Division One outfit Sholing shortly afterwards on non-contract terms, becoming a huge hit during the first half of the 2021/22 campaign, making 10 appearances in all competitions for the senior side. His exciting performances didn't go unnoticed, and Adams was recognised on an international basis after he was selected for England Schoolboys U18s for their Centenary Shield fixture in December 2021.

His performances led to him moving to Latics in February 2022, and just hours after signing his first professional contract, the 19-year-old marked his competitive debut with a goal in Latics' narrow LFA Professional Youth Cup defeat against Rochdale at Bower Fold.

Settling in immediately both on and off the field, Adams quickly became a popular member of the U21s cohort due to his personality and character and played regularly for Stephen Crainey’s side as they enjoyed a successful 2022/23 campaign.

His energetic displays have provided him with the opportunity to train regularly with the first team, with the midfielder being involved in Latics’ opening pre-season friendlies against BFC Sifók and Hearts on the back of their warm-weather training camp in Hungary.

A versatile forward who can operate in a number of different attacking positions, Adams has committed his future to Wigan Athletic and will be looking to step up his presence in the first team over the next 12 months.

Congratulations, Joe!

Commenting on Adams’ new contract, First Team Manager Shaun Maloney said:

“I’m delighted Joe has extended his stay with us!

“Joe has had a very different route into Academy football, but he’s done brilliantly for the U21s and has been training with the first team for a while now. He’s a great character, who can play a number of different positions well.

“I am really looking forward to helping him improve and develop as a player."
