New work experience programme allows students to develop their skills and build a better relationship with education

Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Alternate Provision has helped support Secondary School students and reduce their risk of exclusion

Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s alternate provision has helped referred Secondary School students learn new skills and improve their confidence and behaviour.

The programme takes students out of School for one day a week to get involved in work experience opportunities at the Football Club and Community Trust.

These opportunities, which have included working in the Latics’ club shop and on coaching sessions with Community Trust staff, give students a taste of work outside of mainstream education and help re-engage them in School.

Alongside their work experience, students also take part in education and football sessions to support their development in additional areas.

Connor, one of the students on the programme, has been working at the Latics’ club shop and getting involved in coaching sessions through the alternate provision.

“It’s given me a lot more confidence in myself, and overall I just feel better.

“It’s a good thing to do.”
