Wigan Athletic is delighted to confirm that Jack Whatmough has signed a new deal with the Club, keeping him at the DW Stadium until the end of the 2024/25 season.
Whatmough, our reigning Player of the Year after a stellar first season at the Club, has put pen-to-paper on a new two-and-a-half-year deal, committing his immediate future to Latics.
The 26-year-old became the Club’s first new signing under the ownership of Phoenix 2021 Limited when arriving from Portsmouth FC in June 2021, and has gone on to make 77 appearances in all competitions for Latics thus far.
The defender impressed immensely in his maiden season at the DW as a mainstay at the heart of the defence, playing in every game to help Latics to the Sky Bet League One title.
His efforts in a blue and white shirt last season did not go unnoticed, both in the stands and across the league - winning the Club’s Player of the Year award as well as securing a much-deserved place in the League One Team of the Year at the EFL Awards.
Jack has made his first step up into the Championship this season seamlessly, making 25 appearances in the second tier as Latics continue to fight for survival under Shaun Maloney.
With a new deal now finalised, as well as scoring the vital winning goal in last weekend’s win over Huddersfield Town, the highly-rated defender will be looking to continue his form in a Latics shirt for years to come.

Jack Whatmough said: “I’m over the moon. It’s been in the pipeline for a while now, but to finally get it done and announced is a proud moment for me and my family.
“There were no grey areas. As soon as I spoke with Mal (Brannigan) about extending my stay, it was always about getting it done as soon as we can.
“There are loads of reasons (why I am extending my future) but the main reason for me is that I’m enjoying my football. I love the Football Club, and everyone has been brilliant with me since I've been here.
"I’m happy that everything is done now, and hopefully we can now keep this Club in the Championship.”
Manager, Shaun Maloney said: “The retention of Jack is great for us as a Club. He has shown both before my arrival and in his short time with me the ability that he has.
“He works hard in training, is very physical and is great in the air, as we saw with his winning goal at the weekend. He is also calm under pressure and is developing into a real leader within our back line.
“Jack is at an age now where he will play his best football in a Wigan Athletic shirt and I am looking forward to helping him on that journey.”
Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, Malachy Brannigan said: “Jack was the Club’s first new signing under the ownership of Phoenix 2021 Ltd when arriving from Portsmouth FC in June 2021 and he has gone from strength to strength.
“A key priority for us as a Board was to tie Jack down on a new deal and I am glad we have been able to do that.
“Positive talks have been ongoing with Jack for some time so it’s great for all parties that we can now announce the deal and he can continue to help us move forward.”
