- Latics forward reflects on the goalless draw at Ewood Park
- Lang: “I felt we looked promising and created a lot of chances. We were unlucky not to come away with a goal, but I think we are looking a lot more lively in the final third."
Callum Lang believes that Monday’s hard-fought draw at Blackburn Rovers has provided them with a real platform to build from moving forward.
Latics produced a really encouraging performance during Shaun Maloney’s first game in charge at Ewood Park, earning an invaluable point in their fight for Sky Bet Championship survival.
Speaking to Latics TV post-game, Lang felt his side were good value for their point, and spoke about the importance of now turning their positive performances into victories.
“I thought the performance was good,” he said.
“I thought we started the game very well, and in the second half, we had to dig deep at times but we defended very well all the way through the game.
“All the new lads have shown what they can do straight away, and I thought we looked good in (our) shape.
“I felt we looked promising and created a lot of chances. We were unlucky not to come away with a goal, but I think we are looking a lot more lively in the final third.
“We need to start getting three points. That’s the main thing, and that’s what we came here to do today. We wanted all three points but we’ll move on and try and get them against Huddersfield.”
Monday evening marked the first game of Maloney’s reign as manager of Wigan Athletic, and Lang expressed that his early experiences of working with the Gaffer has given him a newfound confidence to go out onto the field and perform.
“He’s come in, spoken to us all individually and for myself personally, he’s given me a lot of confidence. We just need to keep getting results on the pitch.”
Over 2,700 Tics fans made the trip to Ewood Park, and they were in fine voice throughout as they helped Latics dig deep and pick up a vital point. Lang was quick to recognise the fans’ outstanding support and expressed that they have a huge role to play between now and the end of the season.
“The support was amazing again today, as it always is. It’s exciting for us (when they travel in numbers) and we need them to do the same on Saturday.
“We all need to stick together and hopefully we can get the wins that we need.”
