- Maloney: "The biggest thing was to get through to the next round and we're looking forward to that draw."
Shaun Maloney was delighted after his Wigan Athletic side secured their passage into the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at York City.
Latics were provided with an extremely tough challenge in foggy conditions at the LNER Community Stadium, with the National League outfit posing a real threat throughout the 90 minutes.
Stephen Humphrys was the match-winner on the night for Maloney’s men, calmly rounding David Stockdale a minute after the hour mark for his ninth goal of the season.
Speaking to Latics TV post-game, Maloney spoke of his happiness that his side overcame the test and booked their place in the next round of the competition.
“I am very happy that we’re in that Third Round draw,” he said.
“I was reasonably happy with the performance - definitely in the second half. The last few minutes got a bit nervy but I’m really happy.
“The only criticism is that we could’ve been more clinical and I have to also give credit to York as they had a fair few chances as well.
“Once we started to control the game, I thought we played well. I am really happy with the players.
“After the first 20 minutes, I started to like the game. The biggest thing was to get through to the next round and we’re looking forward to that draw."
