Wigan Athletic winger Jonny Smith was delighted to make another big step forward in his road to recovery on Tuesday afternoon.

Having picked up an injury during the infancy of his time at the DW Stadium, Smith has been working hard behind the scenes to get back fit and raring to go.

Smith played his first competitive match in four months for Latics U21s, completing a half for Stephen Crainey’s men in the 2-1 victory over Carlisle United at Christopher Park.

Speaking to Latics TV post-game, Smith couldn’t hide his delight after making his return after an extended period out injured.

“It was good to be back out there, playing with all the lads.

“It was great to finally pull on a Wigan shirt, and it’s definitely a start. I was taking off the cobwebs with it being my first game in four months.

“It was a good start and something to build on.”

While Smith is yet to make his debut for Latics in a first-team match, he has already introduced himself to the supporters, attending matches at the DW Stadium and being a special guest in the Family Zone.

Having felt the warmth and the passion from his interaction with the fans, Smith cannot wait to play in front of the Latics faithful.

“The away following has been unbelievable and going to the home games at the DW, the fans are great and I can’t wait to play in front of them.

“They’ve been turning up in numbers and the lads have been brilliant at the start of the season, and it’s just about getting in the team and trying to help as much as I can.”
