Wigan Athletic U21s will get their 2023/24 Professional Development League campaign underway with a home fixture against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday afternoon (12pm kick-off).

Latics will head into the game, aiming to get their season off to the perfect start at Christopher Park.

Pre-season has been a really beneficial period for Stephen Crainey’s young charges, with most of the U21s players training daily with the first team and being heavily involved in their pre-season fixtures.

They have been able to test their credentials against established senior opposition and gain some vital match minutes under their belt which is what pre-season is all about.

The U21s have had one pre-season fixture as a group, pushing a strong Prescot Cables side all the way at the Joseph Russell Stadium, narrowly falling to a 2-1 defeat at the start of August.

Crainey’s young charges will open up the season against their final opponents of 2022/23, and they will be aiming for a repeat scoreline after prevailing 5-1 win at Loftus Road last May.

After an outstanding campaign last term, Latics will be hoping to pick up where they left off and enjoy an equally impressive year in 2023/24.
