It’s set to be an incredibly exciting week for a number of our 3PL Wigan Athletic Academy players, as they travel to Italy to take part in the 2023 Sicily Football Cup.
Youngsters born in the year 2010 will be flying out from Manchester on Thursday 6 April to represent the Football Club in a prestigious youth tournament that includes the likes of S.S Lazio, AS Roma and Olympiakos.
It will provide young School Boys with the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best Academy talents in Europe, and most importantly, experience a new culture overseas which will undoubtedly aid both their personal and professional development.
Our Academy School Boys Team will be proudly wearing the 2022/23 #BELIEVE Third Kit throughout the duration of the tournament to directly signify how proceeds raised through the #BELIEVE FansFund have played a part in funding the trip overseas.
The 3PL Wigan Athletic Academy has always prided itself on developing good people as well as good footballers, and life-enriching experiences like the trip to Sicily go a long way in supporting that long-term process.
The Sicily Football Cup is a 21-team tournament, which will start on Thursday 6 April before concluding on Sunday 9 April.
Latics’ Lead Foundation Phase Coach, Jay Cochrane, is hoping that the young players will reap the rewards both on and off the field from their experiences in the South of Italy.
“At Wigan Athletic, we are very big on developing people, as well as young athletes,” he said.
“While we are naturally excited at the prospect to play against the likes of Roma, Lazio and Olympiakos, we are even more excited to see how the boys develop off the field.
“They will have the opportunity to experience a new culture and communicate with people from different environments. It all contributes to their growth as people, and the trip will give them a life experience which will hopefully stand them in good stead for the future.
“All the boys cannot wait to board the plane on Thursday. The energy is palpable, and you can feel it when you walk around Stadium Way. It’s set to be a brilliant trip, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how it helps the lads develop both on and off the field.
“The boys have all been given a 2022/23 #BELIEVE Third Kit to wear throughout the competition, which is special for us as it will be the first time that a School Boy Academy team has worn a kit that has been paid for by the fans through the #BELIEVE FansFund.
“It will give us an extra incentive to do well in the competition, as we will be directly representing the fans in every game that we play. The #BELIEVE FansFund has helped make a real difference at the Academy since it was introduced, and we’re going to make sure that we wear the kit with pride.”
