Wigan Athletic Community Trust hold EFL Utilita Kids Cup with Orrell Newfold being crowned champions!

Schools from across Wigan & Leigh competed to represent Latics in upcoming regional tournament
After a hard-fought tournament Orrell Newfold were declared the winners
Orrell Newfold will go on to represent Latics against other EFL team representatives

Wigan Athletic Community Trust holds EFL Utilita Kids Cup at Leigh Sport Village.

The tournament invites schools across Wigan and Leigh to compete to represent Latics in future rounds of the tournament. With the opportunity to play at Wembley Stadium, before the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final, available to the two clubs that make it to the final.

Featuring 30 schools from across Wigan and Leigh, the tournament was an excellent showcase of talent and determination from the pupils representing their schools. Alongside the football tournament, the pupils were also visited by Latics’ mascot Crusty the Pie, and had the chance to lift and have their photo taken with the Sky Bet League One Trophy.

After a tightly contested group stage and knockout rounds, the finalists were Orrell Newfold and Marus Bridge Primary School. With Orrell Newfold running out the eventual winners.

David Wright a Primary School teacher at Orrell Newfold who coached their team said “We’ve had a great time at the Kids’ cup today. We come every year and it’s always well organised and a great opportunity for the children to enjoy themselves and play some good football.

From tournaments like this we’ve started up girls’ clubs, and we’ve started up Key Stage One clubs as well. So it’s been absolutely massive at school.”

Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Assistant Primary School Manager Martin Fitzsimmons added “It’s great to see so many schools coming here from across Wigan and Leigh.

The impact is massive. The tournaments give the kids a competitive element, so they learn about winning and losing and it gives them the chance to compete against other schools in a similar age bracket to them.”
