Wigan Athletic Community Trust hosts girls’ #PLKicks Tournament

Last week, Wigan Athletic Community Trust held a Junior Girls’ #PLKicks tournament at Wigan Youth Zone.

Welcoming three different Latics teams from #PLKicks sessions across Wigan, as well as a team from Morecambe FC Community Sports, the tournament celebrated girls’ football and the impact of the Lionesses winning Euro 2022.

With Leigh Sports Village hosting fixtures involving elite international teams including Portugal, Switzerland and the Netherlands during Euro 2022, the tournament has had a profound impact on girls’ football throughout the region.

With increased attendances at both girls’ football and Women’s recreational football sessions, the legacy of the tournament is continuing to impact and improve equal access to football programmes across Wigan and Leigh.

The #PLKicks tournament brought together participants from three different Wigan Athletic Community Trust #PLKicks sessions, as well as welcoming a team from Morcambe FC Community Sports, the official charity of Morecambe FC.

Before the tournament kicked off the players took part in a workshop on female empowerment and the impact of the Women’s Euros, including a Q&A with the FA’s National Tournaments Legacy Manager Stacey Mullock, and Latics’ Women’s Recreational Football Officer Katie Wells.

The FA’s National Tournaments Legacy Manager Stacey Mullock said “Over the last few years the profile of the game has started to go up and through all of these amazing role models in the Lionesses, it’s showing girls that it is an option for them to play.”

Wigan Athletic Community Trust #PLKicks Manager Rachel Wood added “We’re here to celebrate and inspire the next generation of female footballers. Now it’s more important than ever to make sure the legacy of the Women’s Euros is carrying on.

“#PLKicks is helping to create those pathways for the younger generation of female footballers.”
