Wigan Athletic Community Trust Hold PL Primary Stars Girls’ Tournament with Orrell Newfold Being Crowned Champions!

Schools from across Wigan & Leigh competed to represent Latics in upcoming regional tournament
After a hard-fought tournament Orrell Newfold were declared the winners
Orrell Newfold will go on to represent Latics against other team representatives

Featuring 16 schools from across Wigan and Leigh, the Premier League Primary Stars tournament invites schools from across Wigan and Leigh to compete to represent Latics in a regional final against other community organisations.

The day was an excellent showcase of talent and determination from the pupils representing their schools. Alongside the football tournament, the pupils also had the chance to lift and have their photo taken with the Sky Bet League One Trophy. And after a hard-fought final match, Orrell Newfold were crowned the winners.

Miss Hart, a Primary School teacher at Orrell Newfold who coached the winning team said, “We’re really lucky that we have a fantastic squad. They thoroughly enjoyed the day and to come and play somewhere like this, it’s fantastic.”

Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Primary Schools Manager, Greg Hardman added, “We’ve seen a real good spike in female football and the atmosphere is great, we love hosting these events.

“For some of these girls, it might be their first foray into a competition. So, we're here to help those

that want to really play and those that might be feeling it out for the first time as well. We're trying to engage with as many different abilities as we can.

“It’s so impactful, you can see today the girls have big smiles on their faces and as staff here today, that’s why we do what we do. We love seeing them enjoy themselves.”
