  • The Club have also taken up the option to extend the contract of Wigan-born midfielder Scott Smith for a further year

Wigan Athletic have exercised the options to extend the contracts of forward James McClean and midfielder Scott Smith by a further year.

McClean, 33, returned to Latics last summer for a second spell with the Club after leaving Stoke City, and went on to score ten goals in 37 matches in all competitions.

Midfielder Smith, 20, made his debut for his hometown team this season, featuring in the Carabao Cup first round win at Hull City, and the second round victory over Bolton Wanderers in his first appearance at the DW Stadium for the first team.

Smith made a further six appearances before suffering an injury in our Papa John’s Trophy tie at Accrington Stanley in November. The midfielder, who was named as Latics’ PFA Community Champion for the 2021/22 season, recovered from injury to feature in Latics’ final four U23 Professional Development League fixtures.

Congratulations to both players on extending their stays with the Club.
