World Down Syndrome Day is an official awareness day on 21 March, which was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Wigan Athletic’s first team players will be promoting World Down Syndrome Day 2022 ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One match with Morecambe FC.

World Down Syndrome Day is the official annual awareness day for people with Down syndrome and occurs on 21 March, which was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socioeconomic lines in approximately 1 in 800 live births, although there is considerable variation worldwide. Down syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues.

The eldest son of Wigan Athletic’s Head Physiotherapist Joe Maden Wilkinson, Harry, has Down syndrome and Joe has spoken of the significance of raising awareness ahead of Saturday’s game.

“World Down Syndrome Day is all about raising awareness of Down syndrome, and advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome,” Joe said.

“I’d like to thank the Club and in particularly the players for raising awareness this weekend, and hopefully supporters can take the time to learn more about Down syndrome via the official World Down Syndrome Day website.”
