Josh Stones was delighted that he was able to mark his competitive debut for the U21s with two goals in Wednesday’s 5-0 victory over Watford U21s.
In a simply stunning performance at Christopher Park, goals from Stones (2), Joe Rodwell-Grant, Baba Adeeko and Abdi Sharif helped Latics get their 2022/23 Professional Development League campaign off to a winning start.
Speaking to Latics TV, Stones spoke about his happiness to notch a brace, and most importantly, help his side earn three points in their opening fixture against the Hornets.
“I think we did well as a team and did what the gaffer wanted us to do,” he said.
“It was a good team performance and a good three points. There’s nothing better than scoring but it’s more important to get the win.”
On his two goals, Stones added:
“Frankie (Bunn) told me to take a free kick, and I just hit it to be honest, and luckily it went in.
“The second one was a counter attack. The team did well to break away and then it was a good one-two. There is no better feeling to score - it’s the best thing in football.”
A summer arrival from Guiseley AFC, Stones has certainly enjoyed a memorable start to life in Latics colours. The 18-year-old expressed that he has settled in quickly, thanks to the welcoming environment that exists within the Football Club.
“We’re all bonding well (as a team) and we’re looking forward to the season ahead,” he said.
“I’ve settled in perfectly. We’ve got a good group of lads and everyone is loving it. Everyone is working hard in training, and I’ve absolutely loved being here - it’s the most I’ve enjoyed my football so far in my career.”
Stones’ two goals against Watford caps off a memorable 24 hours for the Latics forward after he made his debut for the first team in the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood Town last night. Delighted to make his family proud, Stones is hoping that it will be the first appearance of many.
“It was a good feeling. My Mum and Dad were there and hopefully, it was just the start," he said.
“There is nothing better than making your family proud and hopefully I can keep on making them proud.”
