Wigan Athletic captain Jamie Jones expressed his pride at captaining his side to Sky Bet League One survival.

Despite a 3-1 defeat to Hull City on Saturday afternoon, results elsewhere in the league meant that Latics achieved safety with one game left.

Reflecting post-match on Latics TV Jones said:

“It’s been emotional and such a long season but I’m so proud to captain this team with what we’ve achieved today, it’s outstanding.”

He continued: “It’s been a horrendous season and we’ve made history today with this football club and what we have achieved this season. It’s not about today’s game and getting beat 3-1, it’s about survival with a game to go.

“Going into administration is the worst thing I have experienced in football and I wouldn’t wish it on any club. To be part of this team and be captain of this team and stay up, I’m so proud.

“To do what we have done, it’s been a real battle and everyone to do with this club and the fans, deserve it.

“They’ve had a tough season and the connection with the fan base has been outstanding. The support they gave when the club was in real trouble with the money that was raised to keep the club afloat was phenomenal.

“It means so much for the town and the people of Wigan to do what we have achieved.”
