Wigan Athletic Community Trust are giving local young people the chance to get back into work thanks to the government’s new Kickstart scheme.
Latics are one of 65 EFL clubs involved on the programme which will offer six-month work placement roles to hundreds of young people aged 16-24 claiming Universal Credit.
The Community Trust will be offering a number of opportunities in sports coaching and the day to day running of the organisation, as well as working with the football club, DW Stadium and local partners to further broaden the offer throughout the year.
Head of Community at Wigan Athletic, Tom Flower, said: “The pandemic has had a massive impact on jobs and work opportunities for young people who are struggling to get a foothold in employment.
“We are delighted to be involved in the Kickstart programme which will allow us support young people who need it most and provide them with invaluable experience and an insight into the world of work.
“Through our existing Training and Skills offer, we continue to enhance the lives of many young people by providing them with the skills and pathway to achieve their full potential and allow them to take the next steps in their careers.
“We look forward to welcoming the first participants to Wigan Athletic.”
The Kickstart project targets young people who have been hit especially hard by Coronavirus and Kickstart focuses on giving them the best possible chance of getting a job.
Under the scheme, the EFL Trust, the charitable arm of the EFL will be acting as a Gateway provider, bringing together a network of Football Clubs, Community Organisations and other partners, to provide a wealth of opportunities across the country for the out-of-work youngsters.
Kickstart roles at the Community Trust will begin in March and April with further details on the opportunities provided by contacting Traineeship Coordinator, Joe Pym, on j.pym@wiganathletic.com.
