Activities provided through the programme will include walking football, soccercise, ‘Back to Football’ sessions and activities for ‘sideline mums’, with opportunities also available to volunteer and help run sessions.

“Sessions will be developed in line with the local need and through consultation, but it really is an opportunity for residents in all areas of the borough to tell us what activities they would like to see available and where, Katie added.

“I have always been an advocate for health and fitness and to be able to combine this with women’s football is very exciting.

“I aim to share my knowledge with participants, but ultimately I just want people to move more, boost their mental health and have fun. What better way is there to achieve this than recreational football?”

The Community Trust have been running a number of other projects encouraging girls of all ages to participate in the game with over 80 girls taking part in FA Wildcats Football Centres.

Wigan is one of nine host venues selected for the Women’s UEFA European Championships in 2022, with Leigh Sports Village hosting four of the tournament’s fixtures.
