Hull City Reaction | Scott Smith

Midfielder reflects on proud moment as he makes his first team debut for his hometown Club in Carabao Cup victory over Hull City.

  • Scott Smith | “Extra special for me as a Wiganer”
  • Wigan-born academy graduate impressed in first team bow at the MKM Stadium.
  • Smith: “I travelled to Sunderland and saw them in their numbers up there and then tonight as well – if I wasn’t on the pitch or on the bench I’d have been in the stands with them.”

Wigan Athletic midfielder Scott Smith spoke of his delight at making his Latics debut, having progressed through the academy at his hometown Club.

U23 captain Smith shone in midfield as Latics recorded an 8-7 penalty shootout victory over Hull City to secure progress to Round Two of the Carabao Cup.

Reflecting post-match with Latics TV, Smith said:

“It’s a cliché, but it’s everything you dream of when you’re a young kid and I think for me it’s extra special because I am Wigan-born.

“I am over the moon, delighted to be on the pitch and hopefully I’ll get more minutes.”

On how he felt going into his Latics debut, he added:

“I think you have to go into the game and impose yourself – you don’t want to shy away from anything,” he explained. “I think it was great to see the fans here tonight, that helped us through the game.

“I had great pros around me and that made it easy for me to do my stuff.

“I travelled to Sunderland and saw the fans in their numbers up there and then tonight as well – if I wasn’t on the pitch or on the bench, I’d have been in the stands with them.

“It was great to see and great to have them behind us all the way.”

On the team’s performance, he continued:

“I think it was a good performance from the boys; first-half we controlled the ball well and I think we come into the second-half, controlled the first 10 or 15 minutes and got the goal, but then they came back into it with their goal.

“Overall, we played well, the lads got through it and when it goes to penalties it’s always nervous but the lads kept their nerve and did well.”
