19-year-old says Latics knew they need to improve in second-half against young visitors

Wigan Athletic striker Charlie Jolley was delighted to get his first professional goals for the club as his double helped John Sheridan’s side to a 6-1 win over Liverpool U21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Jolley, 19, has graduated from Latics’ academy and been prolific in Under-18 and Under-23 football.

He seized his opportunity in the first team on Tuesday and he was delighted when speaking to Latics TV post-match.

“It was good to get my first goals in a Wigan shirt,” he said. “It is something I wanted to do since the start and there was a chance in the first-half where I could have and I maybe should have passed it but I knew more chances would come and the staff said that at half-time.

“The first one was a great ball from Kal and I was there to finish it; the second one was a striker’s goal because you have to anticipate and that’s what I did.”

Jolley says Latics knew they needed to react after going 1-0 down on the stroke of half-time but he hopes the win on Tuesday helps confidence grow as Sheridan’s side head to Portsmouth on Saturday.

“I think in the second-half we came out knowing we needed to put in a performance,” Jolley explained. “It was good to get a goal in an all-round good team performance, with six goals in the second-half.

“It has been a tough few weeks for the lads but we are always working hard and have been trying our best to get wins so it was good tonight to get a win and hopefully that continues on Saturday.”
