Wigan Athletic manager John Sheridan says Latics’ players have to take responsibility when they’re out on the pitch if they want to be successful.

Latics were leading 2-0 in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday afternoon but exited the competition after National League North side Chorley scored three times after Adam Long was sent off just before half-time for Sheridan’s side.

Reflecting post-match with BBC Sport, Sheridan said:

“Firstly, congratulations to Chorley and full credit to them.

“At home, against a non-league team, you expect to win the game and go through to the next round, especially after you go 2-0 up.

“We should have seen the game through; the sending off changed the game a little bit but with what we have out on the pitch, we should see the game through and win.

“The players are shown all the details; since I have come into the club, I’ve seen that behind the scenes you have an assistant manager that is a brilliant coach, an analyst that does his job thoroughly and for me the players have to take responsibility out on the pitch.

“Good players make the game look simple by doing things simply and sometimes we make the simplest things look very difficult, which is our downfall.

“The goals we have conceded all season have been absolutely comical and, again, the goals today were comical. I am down at the moment and I have to be careful after the game, it is probably the worst result of my managerial career, if I am truthful.

“We can make excuses with injuries but this isn’t necessarily a young team, they’re 20 and 21 and need to take responsibility out on the pitch.

“I have said a few times, we need our best 13 or 14 players fit and then we’ll compete with most teams and we’ve shown that.”
