Wigan Athletic U23 defender Emeka Obi was delighted to score his first goal at the DW Stadium as Nick Chadwick’s side were 2-1 victors over Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League on Monday evening.

Obi put the hosts in front with a powerful 16th minute header, before substitute Sean McGurk struck nine minutes from time to seal a deserved three points for Latics.

Reflecting post-match, Obi said:

“It was a great feeling and my first time scoring here, so I’m happy to get off the mark.

“The run is all down to the training sessions, desire, hard-work. The feeling in the camp is really good from the Under 18s to the 23s, it’s important we aim to keep that going now for the rest of the season.

“I thought second half we were a bit sloppy; we didn’t start it well and obviously they got their equaliser, but we managed to find a way and get the points on the board, which is the most important thing at the end of the day.”

The defender also reflected on a history-making occasion for the Under 18s on Friday evening at Old Trafford. Peter Murphy’s young charges fell short despite a spirited performance in a 2-1 defeat in the FA Youth Cup against Manchester United.

“It’s great exposure for them, I was there with the fans actually watching the game.

“The atmosphere was great on the night, the fans were loving it and I’m sure that reflected to the lads on the pitch during the game, it was great for the academy.”

Obi reflected on the Under 23s next fixture, as they travel to Huddersfield on Friday 6 March in their next Premier League group stage game.

“It’s important we rest our legs and then go again.

“It was a tough game today, so we will rest up and then go their full of confidence and aim to keep this run going.”

Latics are back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Huddersfield Town's Canalside for a 1.00pm kick off in the Premier League Cup group stage.
