Jamal Lowe's 90th minute equaliser earned three big points for Latics.

Speaking to Latics TV after his side's 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday, Paul Cook shared his delight at the way his players dealt with battling to overturn a first half deficit.

"I'm delighted for the players, I really am.

"We were full value for our win tonight. The goal for them came against the run of play and in the second half we just continued to create chances.

"Tonight we put our chances away. Great credit to Jamal Lowe because he has shown tremendous character to keep going and get the goal, it'll give him great confidence.

"We've given up enough leads, people keep telling me every day and now we've come from behind to win. The team doesn't lack character, there are certain traits that we lack and I've got no problem with people saying that, but they don't lack character, desire or work ethic.

"They're a great group of lads to work with and their honesty, desire and work ethic to win shone through tonight. I was delighted for the lads to score a late goal and then hold onto it because Sheffield Wednesday are a good side. They had a good cup win away at QPR on Friday night and I felt that it might impact them a little bit with the travelling and the overnight stays.

"Kieffer Moore and Jamal Lowe were brought into the club to do exactly what they did tonight and when they both do that, we'll win football games. The goals will give both of them great confidence.

"We've got to keep believing and get the amount of points we're going to need to keep us in the division. We've got something to focus on and to fight for, everyone has seen the desire in the dressing room tonight."

17-year-old forward Joe Gelhardt was handed his first start for Latics, something the gaffer said the youngster more than deserves and more than took in the 60 minutes he featured:

"It was a good night for young Joffy making his first start for us, he's fully deserved that. 60 minutes for him was more or less the plan for him.

"We had Michael Jacobs coming back and we've got a strong bench with Joe Williams, Joe Garner and Gavin Massey.

"Joffy did well, I wish he'd got that shot away in the first half when he came in on his left foot, but he can be very happy with his performance."

Unfortunately for Latics, January addition Kieran Dowell was stretchered off midway through the second half. Cook explained:

"It doesn't look a great injury for Kieran Dowell, but we'll have to wait and see. He was doing really well in the game and he's been growing into the club. He's a really good lad, he wants to play football, he trains well and he wants to get better, so we'll be really disappointed if we lose him for a period of time."

Latics' focus now switches to a trip to Sky Bet Championship leaders Leeds United, scene of our incredible 2-1 turn around with 10-men at the end of the 2018-19 campaign...

"It'll be more than nice if we get a repeat of last year," the gaffer added.

"It's going to be a very difficult game, but we need to enjoy our win first because we haven't felt that satisfaction of winning football games for too long. Let's digest this win and get the confidence in everyone to go again on Saturday at Leeds."
