After a remarkable first season as a Category Two academy, Latics’ U18s have formally been ratified as the U18 Professional Development League North Champions, following a Premier League vote this week.

Peter Murphy’s side were 15 points clear at the top of the table before March’s season suspension and richly deserved their crown having won 18 of their 24 league games, scoring 65 goals in the process.

Latics also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup for the first time in the club’s history and the title caps a fine campaign for the academy in their first season operating at Category Two level.

Commenting on the achievement, head of academy Gregor Rioch said:

“We are immensely proud of the players and staff for an incredible first season at category two level,” Rioch said.

“This season we have been challenged by some fantastic academy teams from some of the biggest clubs in English football and the best compliment I can pay the players is that they’ve made everybody stand up and consider Wigan Athletic as one of the most exciting groups of players in the country.

“The success on the pitch is supported from lots of hard work and dedication from many people across the academy and I would like to thank all of the staff for their dedication.”
