Wigan Athletic first team coach Anthony Barry put on a special training session for 14 students from Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Football and Education course last week.
The session, at Latics Euxton training centre, included a number of shooting drills aimed to improve their footballing skills and also finished with a tour of the facility.
Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Level 2 Football and Education course is aimed at young people aged 16-18 years old and provides the opportunity to gain qualifications but also represent Latics in competitive fixtures at the same time.
Luke Bolton, Football and Education student said: “I really enjoyed the visit to the training ground, we did some finishing sessions and it made me feel more confident as a player.
“It was different to what I expected, I didn’t want to let anyone down so it was about giving it my best shot. I really enjoyed the tour and saw Josh Windass who is one of my favourite players so couldn’t complain about that.
Fellow student Sean said: “It was a very entertaining session, we did a lot of different things including learning some new skills as well.
“The course has been good so far, it’s more enjoyable than college as we are able to play football at the same time.”
The yearlong course, based at the Community Trust’s offices at Montrose Skills Hub, includes three days of education, work placement opportunities delivering PE in primary schools across Wigan and the chance to play for Latics in the Community and Education Football Alliance League.
As part of the course, students play fixtures at Christopher Park, home of Latics’ academy teams, work towards an FA Level 1 certificate in football coaching and enjoy volunteering opportunities.
