Paul Cook: “It is important that, if those moments present themselves tomorrow against Brentford, then we must take them.”

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook told Latics TV that his side have to start making the most of key moments in football matches if they are to make more of their recent positive performances, in terms of results.

Supporters can watch the full interview with the manager FREE above, and Cook says his side have to make decisive impacts in both boxes as they develop in the Championship.

“The camp is a happy camp in general but the reality in football is that you get confidence from results and naturally in the last two or three games – 92 minutes at Derby, 86 minutes against Bristol and then 92 minutes against Swansea – it is going to hurt us,” Cook explained.

“When you look back, you at what we could have done better and what we could have done more or how could we stop it but the reality is that we are sometimes making individual mistakes and that comes with experience.

“Maybe, and when you look at the personnel, they are still gaining experience so hopefully – and it has been a long process – we do learn from it. For example, Jamal [Lowe] and Kieffer [Moore] are still in the infancy of their Championship careers, you only have to look at Ollie Watkins at Brentford now, who is doing great, he has been there for three seasons and is still growing – we have to give our lads time to grow if we want any type of success in the future.

“As disappointing as that is, I think the last four games have been enjoyable to watch, I think we have played well in the games and I think we have had moments in games where – if you take them moments – you win the games, but unfortunately for us we haven’t taken them. It is important if those moments present themselves tomorrow against Brentford, then we must take them.”

Speaking about the Bees, who saw a three-game winning run ended by a home defeat to Huddersfield Town last time out, Cook said he sees Thomas Frank’s outfit as a leading Championship side.

“I think Brentford are excellent,” Cook said. “I find myself watching the clips and they’re well coached with good players all over the pitch and possibly within the division they are the team that everyone looks at and wonders why they’re still there.

“They are, in my opinion, one of the best teams in the league and we have a very, very difficult game tomorrow and that’s down to us to manage.”

On his team news, Cook will welcome back Danny Fox to his squad, he continued:

“Danny Fox will make the game tomorrow, which is good news. Josh Windass is back training and available but Lee Evans, Charlie Mulgrew and Tom Pearce don’t make the game.”
