The club are saddened to hear of the passing of former secretary Jack Peel.

Born in Wigan, Jack joined Latics as full-time Secretary in early December 1960 and was previously the Secretary at Wigan Rovers.

One of his first tasks at the club was to end the six-month reign of manager Allenby Chilton, the former England and Manchester United legend (who had a 66% win rate)

Prior to Jack joining, the club only ever had a part-time secretary and sometimes the balance sheets were late in being produced.

Jack was served with new manager Johny Ball, who was later followed by Allan Brown.

Jack resigned his position in December 1965 and was replaced by his assistant-secretary Frank Postlethwaite.

He later became manager at local mining engineering giants Gullick Dobson.

He used to tell a tale of picking a match day programme every home match, before announcing the winner of the lucky number programme draw - so no one had a chance of winning!

Jack became a great friend to then Director and later President Stan Jackson, the father of Latics Chief- Executive Jonathan.

Jack’s funeral will be held on Friday 2 August at 10.30am at St. Matthew's Church, Highfield then on to crematorium.
