Barnett began his playing career with Luton Town before spending three years at Latics in the Championship and League One.
Latics sit one point behind their opponents in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship trip to Luton Town, ex-Wigan Athletic and Luton Town favourite Leon Barnett expects an ‘exciting’ game between two of his former clubs.

The 33-year-old, who started his playing career with Luton Town, spent three seasons with Latics after joining from Norwich City, and became an immediate fan favourite after scoring on his debut in a 4-0 away triumph over Barnsley.

A Community shield appearance against Manchester United and a Europa League goal in November 2013 saw Barnett become a regular for the club, making 53 appearances and scoring five goals in an eventful first season.

Two further seasons saw the defender make 81 appearances for the club, before joining in Bury 2016.

Ahead of Latics’ visit to Kenilworth Road on Saturday, Barnett stressed the importance of the game for both sides:

“Both teams need the points, I think it’s got all the ingredients for an exciting game.

“It’s going to be very tight, both sides need the points ahead of a busy schedule. Luton are not in a great vein of form and their defeat to Brentford was a bad one, but it will be tricky.

“As a Latics and Luton Town fan you look at the table and never know who is going to win, the Championship is such an unpredictable league. Anyone who thinks its going to be a walk in the park might be wrong, both sides will be going out there wanting to prove a point to the other teams.”
