Latics' step up into the Professional Development League ended in a narrow and harsh defeat on the opening day of the season against Millwall, as goals from Jayden Davis and Sean O'Brien gave the hosts the victory, despite a well taken goal from Scotland youth international Luke Robinson, who also hit the post in the first half.
Millwall opened the scoring in the first half when Davis was teed up from the edge of the area, guiding his effort into the right side of the goal from distance with an impressive side-footed shot.
O'Brien doubled the hosts' lead from the penalty spot following a hand ball by Louis Isherwood, before Latics pulled a goal back through smart work between Kyle Joseph and Robinson on the left, with the latter hammering home a well-taken left footed shot for 2-1.
Latics continued to create chances towards the end of the second half, but despite an encouraging performance and some dangerous attacks, Millwall held on to secure their second victory in as many matches.
